This work has been such a gift in my life. It has
brought a depth and level of compassionate understanding
to my own human journey and the journey of my own
Soul. It reveals to me over and over again the Mystery
that embraces us all.
An inspiration I have received and would like
to share with you is the relationship of this work
to the human developmental journey, personal and
collective. A cornerstone in this work is that children,
out of a sense of loyalty, concern, and affection,
will do whatever needs to be done to "bring
order" to an out-of-balance family system.
Ultimately this attempt to bring order will fail
because the child is the one who requires nurturance
to reach his or her potential as a human being.
The responsibility of providing nurturance belongs
to those who come before, specifically the parents.
Often, as a result of what the parents did or did
not receive, their ability to be a nurturing presence
for their children is compromised. It becomes easy
to see how balance and/or a lack of balance within
our current families are connected with the preceding
generations. We all come from somewhere, and when
we lack the connection to what has come before,
and the nourishment therein, we are unable to live
fully the life that is given us.
Developmentally, we begin our lives within the
infant world of sensations and feelings. As infants,
we do not experience ourselves as separate from
the world around us. World and infant are one. Out
of necessity, as life places demands on us for our
own survival, we develop a sense of self as an individual
and lose contact with our awareness of being "one
with the world". In this process we may lose
contact with our sense of aliveness that is the
domain of our sensations and feelings. As individuals
we retain the longing for a more unified experience.
Since development is driven forward, we can no more
return to the dependency of infancy than an Oak
tree can return to being an acorn. People may attempt
to return to this unified experience through addictions
that provide temporary relief but are self-destructive
and leave the longing unfulfilled. We may also temporarily
experience this return to a unified state when we
"fall in love", but at some point we must
once again experience ourselves as individuals on
a shared but separate journey. If we remain true
to our longing, it is possible for each of us to
regain the awareness of Self as something extending
beyond our limits as individuals and to feel life
force flowing freely through our bodies. This is
often referred to as a transcendent or transpersonal
experience, where we maintain our individuality
even as we expand into unity. It has been said that
there are many ways to reach the mountaintop. I
wholeheartedly agree with that statement. My experience
with Family Constellation Work is that it provides
a way for us to share this transpersonal experience
as individuals within a community. Past, present,
and future are connected through ourselves, our
families, and each other in life affirming ways.
Transcendence arrives when
you embrace the life that is given."
